The Cuddy 9 Thomas Terrace, Porthleven,
Helston, Cornwall TR13 9DE

In 1874 John Thomas purchased an area of land in Porthleven and around 1880 the granite, fishermen’s cottages of Thomas Terrace were built. The Cuddy has subsequently been extended to the rear where there is a narrow, pedestrian lane between Thomas Terrace and Thomas Street. The original external cob walls are very thick and inside there are exposed, dark wood beams, characteristic of the area.

The Cuddy is owned by Vivienne and John Horobin, who live in Scotland. We purchased the cottage in the summer of 2005 and use it for our holidays. We have redesigned and installed a completely new kitchen and have re-decorated and put new furniture into both bedrooms. We have upgraded the bathroom and decorated the lounge and the stairs. The Cuddy accommodates a maximum of three people.

Our property manager, Tania Burton, lives close by. She maintains the cottage for us and is available if guests have any queries. Our changeover day is a Friday.

The front door of the cottage opens directly on to Thomas Terrace which slopes down towards the centre of Porthleven. Immediately inside is an open stair to the upper floor and the lounge. The Cuddy is carpeted throughout except for the bathroom which has a vinyl covered floor.

The lounge has hanging space for coats just inside the door, a small sofa, a rocking chair, dining table and chairs. It has an open fire as well as an electric fire and an electric radiator. Logs and coal are available from the supermarket if you want a real fire. There is an audio system and a television with a DVD player as well as a selection of books and puzzles.

The kitchen is off the lounge to the rear and is completely new with a dishwasher, washing machine, fridge-freezer, electric cooker with ceramic hob, extractor fan, tumble drier, microwave and toaster. It has an electric radiator and a radio. The back door leads from the kitchen onto a tiny concrete area giving access to the narrow back lane. This is the sunniest part of the cottage as it faces west.

The stair has a handrail and is open to the lounge. It gives access to the bedrooms and the bathroom. The main bedroom has a quality, 5 feet wide bed and fitted bedroom furniture as well as a radio and radiator. The second bedroom has a single bed, a chest of drawers, a bedside unit and a radiator. All the wardrobe space, a double and a single, is in the main bedroom. Both bedrooms face the front of the cottage. The bathroom has a bath with an overhead electric shower, wash basin and wc. It has an extractor fan, a panel heater and a fan heater. The hot water tank is in the airing cupboard, with an immersion heater.

There is parking on Thomas Terrace, which is subject to availability but you can usually park opposite the cottage or elsewhere on Thomas Terrace or nearby on Thomas Street or Unity Road.

The nearest shop is the Post Office, 200m, which sells newspapers and some food, etc. The harbour and the rest of the shops, including a baker, chemist, fishmonger and supermarket are within 400m. There is parking at the supermarket.
